ACTOR Hugh Laurie is swapping House for blues – after signing a record deal at the age of 51, it was announced today.
The self-taught star – who is seen playing guitar and piano on US TV hit House – is to release an album with major music group Warner

British star Laurie will team up with a range of guest musicians for the New Orleans blues album which he will record this summer.

Warner label WME will release the album, working with musician and producer Joe Henry, in the autumn. Laurie said: "I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity.

"I know the history of actors making music is a chequered one, but I promise no one will get hurt. I am particularly thrilled to be working with Joe Henry, who has produced some of my favourite records of all time, and I can't wait to get started."

Golden Globe-winner Laurie has sung and performed music throughout his career and was seen playing piano in TV's Jeeves And Wooster.

Hugh Laurie, better known for his acting roles in television programmes including Blackadder and House, is now turning his hand to a different trade by starting work on his debut album.

The actor has signed a deal to record a New Orleans blues album over the next few months. Laurie, 51, has written a number of the tracks himself and will be collaborating with guest musicians to create an album he hopes will have mainstream appeal.

"I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity. I know the history of actors making music is a chequered one, but promise no one will get hurt," he said.

Décidément, Hugh Laurie ne s'arrête jamais. Tout en ayant le rôle principal dans la série Dr House , l'acteur de 51 ans a aussi écrit un livre et est sur le point de faire un album blues avec l'aide du producteur récompensé d'un Grammy, Joe Henry .

Hugh Laurie est la personnalité à ne pas manquer en ce moment. Alors qu'il reçoit récompenses sur récompenses pour son rôle de Gregory House dans Dr House, Hugh se lance à présent dans la musique et va bientôt faire un album blues. Pour ajouter une corde à son arc, alors qu'il est déjà acteur, producteur, réalisateur, scénariste et auteur de plusieurs livres dont Tout est sous contrôle, sorti en septembre 2009, le bel acteur vient de signer avec Warner Music Entertainment pour un album aux intonations blues de la Nouvelle-Orléans.

"Je suis très excité par cette nouvelle opportunité. Je sais que l'histoire d'acteurs faisant la musique est à dents de scie, mais je promets que personne ne se blessera !" plaisante Hugh Laurie lors d'une conférence de presse. Pour cet album, l'interprète de House sera accompagné de Joe Henry, qui a déjà été récompensé d'un Grammy et qui a travaillé notamment avec Madonna, et, dans le style plus blues, Elvis Costello et Solomon Burke . "Je suis particulièrement ravi de travailler avec Joe Henry, qui a produit certains de mes albums préférés de tous les temps et je ne peux plus attendre pour commencer !" Vu sa motivation, désormais, on est impatient d'entendre ça !

Hugh Laurie stars as the intense, namesake doctor on the hit Fox series “House.” The British-born actor also sings, is proficient on piano and guitar, and is recording what has been described as a “New Orleans blues” album for Warner Bros. Records.

Laurie slipped into New Orleans this week and spent a day at Piety Street Recording in Bywater, recording horn parts with producer Joe Henry. Henry knows Piety Street well -- that's where he produced much of the Elvis Costello/Allen Toussaint collaboration "River in Reverse."

Toussaint wrote the arrangements for Laurie's project, and joined him in the studio Monday. Featured players included trumpeter Tracy Griffin, saxophonists Clarence Johnson III, Brian “Breeze” Cayolle and Albert Fish, and trombonist “Big” Sam Williams.

Laurie has apparently admired New Orleans from afar for some time. According to published reports, Laurie drove his red 1966 Ford Galaxy convertible to New Orleans this summer, and was happy to discover the town lived up to his expectations.

To gear up for Monday's recording session at Piety Street, Laurie, Henry and several friends dined at Restaurant August on Sunday night.

No word yet on when the album may be released.

Hugh Laurie's Blues Album To Be Released In Spring 2011

For Hugh Laurie fans, his forthcoming blues album is a source of great anticipation. Enticing kernels of information have been doled out on Twitter and the official “Hugh Laurie’s Blues” Facebook page by Conrad Withey, president of Warner Music Entertainment.



Mr. Withey has been doing an excellent job promoting the release, plying his followers on Twitter with information, as well as playing the occasional guessing game (who’s in the the studio with Hugh today?).

No, this will not be just another album from some TV star who just felt like recording an album. Sure, Mr. Laurie had the money and the contacts to make it happen but Warner approached him (and not the other way around). There is a good reason for this: Mr. Laurie has a proven track record as a singer and musician, writing and performing songs for his 90’s sketch comedy show A Bit of Fry and Laurie, as well as his current hit show House. He has also played in bands, most notably the Band From TV, a group of television luminaries who perform for charity. On their CD/DVD set, Hoggin’ All the Covers, you get a taste of just how musically talented Mr. Laurie is. His renditions of Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round In Circles” and an updated version of the chestnut “Goodnight Irene” are standout performances in the set.

If you’re waiting impatiently for Hugh Laurie’s blues record, here is the information Mr. Withey has provided us with so far:

The album is complete and slated for release in the spring of 2011.

Among the guest artists are Tom Jones (who sings on a cut called “Baby, Please Make a Change”), David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), steel guitar aficionado, Greg Liesz, and blues legends Irma Thomas and Dr. John.

According to Mr. Withey’s tweet from October 7th, the collaboration between Ms. Thomas and Mr. Laurie was filmed for posterity: “Hugh’s recording with Irma Thomas has been a triumph. Whole thing filmed and stilled ready for web fans soon. Keep watching facebook!”

Renown producer and songwriter, Allen Toussaint, worked with Mr. Laurie in New Orleans, writing and arranging the horn parts for the record.

Hopefully Mr. Withey will be able to provide a us with a taste of what’s to come soon. This project sounds like it could be a lot of fun and quite possibly a rare musical treat.

No this is not an halloween joke, but I can tell you for sure that Hugh Laurie, aka Dr House, has finally realized one of his most ambitious dream of his life: to record an album with his dream musician Dr John. Hugh Laurie confirmed it when we met yesterday at the Peninsula Hotel in LA: “It’s done. It’s actually done and it’s being mixed as we speak... I sing, play the piano, play the guitar and...”

“How did it get together? Who is the producer of the album?” I asked Hugh.

“Joe Henry who has produced a number of records with another hero of mine, Allen Toussaint. So I had the amazing experience to go to New Orleans and see Allen play behind some horn arrangement that I wrote - very surreal - also to have Dr John sing a song where I accompanied him on the piano as he sang behind me. That was the terrifying thing... so I had no idea if he was rolling his eyes going oh, for God sake” he said smiling and then added: “I always loved him as a singer and of course he plays the piano like an angel. It was a great honor. Irma Thomas sings on a couple of tracks. I kept it very small and intimate, and then of course Tom Jones came in last to sing a very obscure Mississippi song from the ‘30s. Nobody will know it. Nobody heard it. I like sort of rediscovering some old songs from that era. The album will be out in the spring as the season of House ends, because they are planning to send me on tour and make of me a rock star. I am all over it”

“I Am All Over It: that would be a good title for the album” I suggested, and Hugh smiled.

Le premier album de Hugh Laurie devrait sortir le 14 avril chez Warner. Le disque, aux accents soul et New Orleans, a été enregistré cet automne à Los Angeles, sous la houlette du producteur Joe Henry. L'interprète de Dr House est en effet musicien (voix, piano, guitare, batterie, saxo, composition). Il fait partie du groupe caritatif Band From TV, a écrit plusieurs morceaux pour la série dont il est le héros et contribué au dernier CD du rocker Meat Loaf. Il rêvait depuis longtemps d'un album solo.

Blues de docteur

Le Dr House montre des signes de blues profond. Symptomatique: il a enregistré un disque dédié au genre. Cuddy, je veux un audiogramme, son rythme cardiaque et son groupe sanguin!

Ce n’est pas un secret honteux : le Docteur House se pique de blues. Hugh Laurie assume d’ailleurs si totalement son addiction qu’il va diffuser largement ses délires musicaux à travers un album qu’il soigne actuellement pour nous prescrire ses listes de titres en avril prochain. Les fans en seront sans doute malades, les puristes risquent de nous mettre en garde sur les effets secondaires notoires de cette tentative de diversification auditive d’une star télé.

C’est chez Warner Music que devrait en effet sortir le futur album de Hugh Laurie. Et Conrad Withey, boss de cette bonne maison (house, en anglais), s’en réjouit: “Je suis un très grand fan du travail de Hugh et j’ai particulièrement apprécié son implication dans la musique de la série Dr House comme dans d’autres émissions télévisées. Tout le monde sait déjà à quel point Hugh peut être talentueux et polyvalent. Cet album est donc l’occasion rêvée de mettre en lumière sa passion pour le Blues. Hugh est exactement le genre d’artiste avec lequel WME aime travailler. Nous attendons avec impatience d’embellir le succès de Hugh Laurie dans la série Dr House par un projet musical, qui le propulsera au sommet de son accomplissement artistique."

L’accouchement est attendu pour le 14 avril, date du décès (mais en 54) de la chanteuse de blues Liliane Green et journée du pigeon préciseront les septiques critiques.

Mais qu’ils rangent leurs plumes avant de préjuger, car on nous promet un bon choc soul et New Orleans pour cet opus enregistré cet automne à Los Angeles. Une session sous les auspices du producteur Joe Henry, récompensé par deux Grammy Awards et qui clame à qui veut l’entendre: "Tous les musiciens sont avant tout des acteurs, ils doivent incarner un personnage dans de petites histoires de 3 à 4 minutes. J'ai été un grand fan du travail de Hugh à la télévision. Je crois qu’il reste dans le même état d’esprit en tant que musicien, avec la même intelligence et la même générosité émotionnelle."

Certes marié à la soeur de Madonna (ce qui n’est pas incompatible avec des tendances musicales plus proches de Memphis Slim que de Slimmy), pour laquelle il a quand même co-écrit des chansons, Joe Henry a bossé avec des pointures d’un autre genre comme Elvis Costello, Solomone Burke ou Billy Preston. Et la liste n’est carrément pas exhaustive puisque, après tout, c’est pas lui le héros de notre papier.

Chant, piano, guitare, batterie, saxo et même composition : notre bon Dr House presque autodidacte et complètement multidisciplinaire, fait son musicien pour de vrai dans les épisodes de sa série et se produit sur scène, notamment au sein du groupe caritatif Band From TV. Et s’il n’est pas chirurgien, parce que mal en boucher, Hugh Laurie a même donné des coups de canif dans son contrat passé avec les démons du blues en mettant son grain de sel dans la récente galette de Meat Loaf… Qui par ailleurs est également acteur, au pays où les étiquettes ne collent pas.

Quant au style musical, il va bien dans le décor mental de Hugh Laurie, figure emblématique d’un drôle de dossier clamant que "Faire la tronche, ça a de la gueule", théorie validée par votre serviteur (voir signature ci-dessous) et publiée chez nos confrères de GQ France.

Dans une interview longue et exclusive du numéro de janvier, Laurie (pas la chanteuse, Hugh: vous suivez ou quoi ?) renonce à faire le tour de ses maîtres musicaux: "Je pourrais vous citer des centaines de noms! Je n’ai pas de Top 5. Beaucoup de jazz, de blues, de soul. Ce que j’ai enregistré, ce sont des morceaux populaires de blues. Etre dans un studio avec des musiciens est une expérience vraiment exaltante. Je ne veux pas dénigrer ma carrière d’acteur, mais je déteste être photographié, poser…" Pourvu qu’il finisse, aussi, par détester faire de la musique. Parce que c’est le genre de paradoxes qui lui ont bigrement bien réussi à la télé.

Hugh Laurie, fairplay, se sacrifie pour ne pas faire d'ombre au Prince William !

Le talentueux Hugh Laurie, séduisant Dr House, était censé se lancer dans la musique officiellement. Mais un modeste contretemps vient tout bouleverser...

Pianiste hors-pair, ce comédien britannique devait lancer un album de blues censé sortir en avril prochain. Sauf que l'album sera décalé car la date prévue est déjà bloquée par un autre Anglais : le Prince William !

C'est en effet fin avril, le 29 pour être exact, que le Prince s'unira à la belle Kate Middleton. Gentleman et doté d'un sens de l'humour so british, Hugh Laurie a déclaré qu'il allait finalement modifier ses plans à cause de cette annonce : "L'album était censé sortir à la fin du mois d'avril mais cela coïncidait avec le mariage princier, donc évidemment on s'est dit : 'On ne veut pas les rabaisser en Une des magazines'... donc nous repoussons un peu la sortie de l'album".

So funny mais pas étonnant : le British Hugh Laurie nous avait déjà prouvé son sens de l'humour en taclant son "rival" Simon Baker !

Donc, pour les fans, sachez que l'album de Laurie ne sortira... qu'après le mariage princier !

It is not the fate you would expect of the star of arguably the most popular TV show in the world, but Hugh Laurie has got the blues.

The British performer, 51, is the highest paid actor on US television for his role as Dr Gregory House in the medical drama series House. But to prepare for the release of his debut album as a recording artist, he was due to appear in a small New Orleans venue earlier this week for his first ever gig, with a crack band behind him – featuring the likes of local legend Allen Toussaint.

Laurie, star of British TV series including A Bit of Fry and Laurie and the PG Wodehouse adaptation Jeeves and Wooster, says he is a lifelong fan of the blues, ever since hearing I Can't Quit You Baby by Willie Dixon as a child. "I'm embarrassed to say I don't recall where I was when I heard that John Lennon had been assassinated," he said recently, "but I do remember where I was when I heard Muddy Waters had died. I was driving down the A1 from Lincolnshire and had this awful, selfish reaction: 'Now I'll never get to see him play live'."

To satisfy his musical ambitions, Laurie recorded an album at Ocean Way studios in Los Angeles in September 2010, covering songs such as St James Infirmary. Guests on the record, titled Let Them Talk, include pianist Dr John, blues singer Irma Thomas and Sir Tom Jones. Laurie sings lead vocals and plays the piano and guitar.

"In my imagination New Orleans just straight hummed with music, romance, joy, despair," he said. "Its rhythms got into my gawky English frame and, at times, made me so happy and sad, I just didn't know what to do with myself. I love this music as authentically as I know how."

The producer of the record, singer-songwriter Joe Henry, said: "I'm sincere when I say I think people will be stunned, not just at how much time he's devoted to his musical life but how interesting his take on the music is."

Laurie has previously played guitar in different episodes of House and guested as a pianist on Meat Loaf's's 2010 album Hang Cool Teddy Bear following an appearance from the US rock star on the TV show. He also appeared in the music videos for the Kate Bush single Experiment IV in 1986 and the 1992 single Walking on Broken Glass by Annie Lennox.

Other actors to have embarked on musical careers include Woody Allen, Bruce Willis and Kevin Costner, as well as Scarlett Johansson and Juliette Lewis.

In 2009 Steve Martin revealed his love of old-time country music and released the album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, featuring appearances from Dolly Parton and Earl Scruggs. It won the comedy actor the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.

Anticipating criticism of his new career, Hugh Laurie added in a statement to accompany the release of Let Them Talk: "I was not born in Alabama in the 1890s. I've never eaten grits, cropped a share, or ridden a boxcar. I am a white, middle-class Englishman, openly trespassing on the music and myth of the American south. If that weren't bad enough, I'm also an actor: one of those pampered ninnies who can't find his way through an airport without a babysitter."

The album is released on 9 May. Laurie is billed to close the Cheltenham Jazz festival in May and a London date will also be announced.

Hugh Laurie has recorded the first live performance of material from Let Them Talk exclusively for guardian.co.uk. Three songs from this session will be broadcast live on the site at 16.00 GMT on 23 March.
